Deposed Gabonese president Ali Bongo freed by military junta
Former Gabonese President Ali Bongo, who was deposed in a coup, is free to leave the nation and travel abroad, according to the leader of the revolution.
“He has freedom of movement… and can travel abroad if he wishes,” General Brice Oligui Nguema said in a statement read on state television.
Bongo, who had been in power for 14 years, has been under house arrest since the August 30 military coup, which took place without bloodshed less than an hour after his party declared his re-election in a ballot deemed as illegitimate by the putschists.
“Given his state of health, the former President of the Republic Ali Bongo Ondimba has freedom of movement. He can travel abroad if he wishes to carry out his medical checks,” Ulrich Manfoumbi, Colonel Manfoumbi stated, reading from a press statement signed by Oligui, that Oligui took his oath as interim president on Monday.
Bongo sustained a major stroke in October 2018, leaving him physically disabled and unable to move his right leg or arm.
Bongo became president in 2009, following his father Omar, who controlled the country for 41 years and earned a reputation for tyranny and kleptocracy.
He was re-elected in 2016 under contentious conditions, but two years later suffered a stroke that undermined his grasp on power.
According to the official contested results, Bongo received 64.27 per cent of the vote, while Ondo Ossa received 30.77 per cent.
In the immediate aftermath of the coup, Ondo Ossa pushed Oligui to resign, claiming that while he had won the elections, the result had been “cancelled” by the military takeover.
He also claimed that Oligui and Bongo were related and that the event was more of a “palace revolution” that was currently propagating what he termed the “Bongo system.”

Hulk Hogan, the WWE icon famed for his characteristic tights and flamboyant demeanour, married for the third time on Friday, swapping his trademark gear for a tuxedo to marry fiancée Sky Daily in Florida.
Close relatives and friends, including Hogan’s son Nick and Daily’s three children, attended the modest wedding at Indian Rocks Baptist Church.
Hogan, 70, wore a typical black tuxedo, while Daily, 45, wore a beautiful white wedding gown and diamond-encrusted 18-karat white gold jewellery. According to TMZ, the pair swapped $500,000 rings.
“My new life starts now!” On Instagram, Hogan posted a video of the day.
Hogan, whose actual name is Terry Bollea, is married for the third time. From 1983 to 2007, he was married to Linda, the mother of his two children, Brooke and Nick.
In 2010, he married Jennifer McDaniel, but the pair split in 2021.
Hogan and Daily, a yoga instructor, revealed their engagement at the wedding of their friends Corin Nemec and Sabrina Nova in July.

Another reason for Harry’s projected birthday snub might be that the Royal family has changed the criteria for birthday posts, with only senior working members now being publicly acknowledged.
Meanwhile, Harry looked to be in good spirits as he celebrated his pre-birthday with Meghan and the Archewell crew at a typical German restaurant.
